Legal Brief for December, 2022

Wisdom & Humor at Christmas

At this time in 2020 I wrote for my December Legal Brief: "We will all be glad to see the last of 2020".  And then again last year in 2021 I wrote "Unfortunately the same comment applies again this year".  Things have certainly improved since last year but as the proverbial saying goes "We are not out of the woods yet".  As I noted last year, it seems that as much as ever we need some humour and wisdom in our lives to draw us away from the daily grind of dreary news headlines and reports, which this year sadly includes the murderous war of aggression by Russia against Ukraine.

Thus, as was the case the last two years, in the spirit of the season here are a few quotes from some famous, and not so famous, people on Christmas:

"Peace on earth will come to stay when we live Christmas every day." (Helen Steiner Rice)

"Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas." (Peg Bracken)

"A good conscience is a continual Christmas." (Benjamin Franklin)

"May you never be too grown up to search the skies on Christmas Eve." (Anonymous)

"Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality." (Washington Irving)

"Nothing ever seems too bad, too hard or too sad when you've got a Christmas tree in the living room." (Nora Roberts)

"When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things - not the great occasions - give off the greatest glow of happiness." (Bob Hope)

"The way you spend Christmas is far more important than how much." (Henry David Thoreau)

"You know you're getting old when Santa starts looking younger." (Robert Paul)

"I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year.  I will live in the Past, the Present and the Future." (Ebenezer Scrooge)
